Marston, John
(1574-1634)
   He was born possibly at Coventry, Warwickshire, and graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1594. He took orders around 1609 and was vicar of Christ Church, Hampshire, from which he resigned (possibly from ill health) in 1631. He died in Aldermanbury parish, London, and was buried in the Temple Church beside his father. Many of his poems relate to his plays; for example, "To Everlasting Oblivion" is taken from his play The Scourge of Villainy (1598) (burned by archiepiscopal order in 1599). Some of his other plays: The Metamorphosis of Pigmalion's Image, and Certain Satyres, 1598. The Malcontent, 1604. Eastward Ho, 1605 (for which he spent some time in prison for satirizing King James I). Marston, 1610. Written for the Children of Paul's Theatre Company: The History of Antonio and Mellida, 1602 (with its sequel Antonio's Revenge also in 1602). What You Will, 1607. Some of his poems: "Here's a toy to mock an Ape indeed," "Perfectioni Hymnus," "The Wonder of Women," "To euerlasting Obliuion," "To his Mistress," "Proemium in librum tertium," "A Cynicke Satyre," "To Detraction I Present My Poesie."
